Curly Girls Team

A few months ago I decided I wanted to draw about an specific subject, CURLS. I wanted my work to look more cohesive and I decided to work with a very specific palette. I have always used tons of colors in my illustrations and this time I wanted to tried something different, so I chose hot pink and blue as the principal colors, also some shades of each colors.

Hace unos meses decidí que quería ilustrar sobre un tema en específico, RULOS. Quería que mi trabajo se viera un poco mas cohesivo así que también decidí utilizar una paleta limitada. Siempre he usado en mis ilustraciones un montón de colores y esta vez quise intentar algo distinto, así que utilicé Fucsia y azul como colores principales más unos derivados de estas.

I thought it would be a cute idea to have a hashtag where you could see all the illustrations together, live my own social media album and I chose #CurlyGirlsTeam because I wanted to engaged with girls that have curly hair! aaaand I created a logo! haha.

También me pareció chévere tener un hashtag donde se apreciaran mejor todas las ilustraciones con este tema, mi propio album en las redes sociales. Así que escogí #CurlyGirlsTeam porque mi target del momento eran chicas con pelo enrulado! yyyy también creé un logo! jaja.

If you are not use to have a limit palette it can get very difficult at first. It's actually a very good exercise! because you can be more focus and aware of the technique and shapes.

Coming back to digital was something that I was looking forward, I love traditional techniques but I also wanted to improve my digital lines. So...I made lots of illustrations about curls! I started with this poster of 9 girls with different curly hair styles!

Si no estas acostumbrado a usar una paleta limitada puede ser bastante difícil al principio. Es un muy buen ejercicio! porque te enfocas más en la técnica y formas.

Regresar a la técnica digital era algo que estaba esperando con ansias jeje. Me encanta ilustrar en tradicional pero también quiero mejorar mis lineas en digital. Así que... hice muchas ilustraciones sobre rulos! Empecé con esta lámina de 9 chicas con distintos tipos de pelo enrulado!

I had so many things to draw about, haha I made an illustration with the must have products for curly hair, portraits and my version of one of the National Geographic issues.

Tuve muchas cosas relacionadas a el pelo enrulado de las cuales dibujar, jaja hice una ilustración con los productos que una chica de pelo rulo debe tener si o si, retratos y hasta una portada de National Geographic en mi estilo 

It was a great exercise having a specific theme and a very small color palette! You should try it too :)

Fue buenísimo este ejercicio de tener un tema en específico y una paleta de color limitada! Te invito a que lo intentes también! :)

Inktober experience! Experiencia Inktober!

This year I decided to try again the famous Inktober! For those who still don't know what it is, I leave the link here with the explanation of the creator Jake Parker.

After tried and failed 2 years ago not passing the 3rd day, last year I finally managed to do the 31 days!. I came back to traditional techniques, I have always loved to make sketches in pencil and paper before digitizing it or adding ink and colours! In fact, my first and only tattoo (for now) is the outline of a pencil! hehe.

So...getting back to the subject! The thing is that by 2016, my illustration's technique was mostly digital and Inktober 2016 had me take my box of 12 coloured pencils from Faber Castell (which was almost new and I have had it since 2013) and I fell in love again with this technique!.

I liked it that much, that even after finishing my 31 days of Inktober I continued using this technique. I like the texture that brings to the illustration, it makes me feel like is more warm and familiar. I guess it also influenced that at that time I worked in an agency (dementor) that consumed all my time, even the one I did not have. We used to work every day minimum until 8 pm ... minimum! Obviously as you would imagine the least thing I wanted to do when arriving home or on weekends was getting into the computer.

Now, lets talk about this year! I decided to use the ink! I have always been attracted to other techniques but the truth is that I just don't have the patience to use and experiment  with them... so I decided to be serious about this test of 31 days. Also showing it every day helped me to commit 100% with this new technique. I also decided on this technique because I usually use so many colors in my illustrations and with this I would go back to basics, the black and white. Talking about basics, this were the tips that I decided to follow this year!

1. Have a theme. I love everything about dance and I decided to use this theme for my Inktober, to give a turn to the original list and to look at it as a whole serie with more coherence between them.

2. Prepare a list! There is the Jake Parker's official prompt list but other illustrators also created their own lists. I decided to look for 31 dances and try to find something in common between the dances and the words on the official list. Several times it was not possible haha, I just illustrated a dance that I liked.

3. Select your materials and try to keep it simple! I decided to use materials I already had, I used my Winsor & Newton ink, 2 brushes (one came with the watercolors I had as a gift and the other is Royal & Langniekel, bought in Michaels), a Mongol pencil, a Micron 05 marker and a white Gelly Roll pen. I always had them ready at my table to be used every day. If we have many materials it can be overwhelming and we would want to use them ALL.

4. Prepare the paper!. I decided that I would spend on paper because I wanted the final art to be the cleaned and decent haha, so in a 2x1 Michaels sale I bought a mixed media paper Strathmore block. I cut the pages in half to have my 31 sheets ready, so I would have that work advanced for my day-to-day practice.

5. No stress! the idea from the beginning was to practice and not to get stressed! I kept in mind the goal, but knewing that if there were complications in the way I wouldn't die in the attempt hehe. There were days I did it, others I didn't, others I got to do up to 4! but I never felt bad or stressed for not doing it in time.

So...! What did I learn from my Inktober 2017's experience??!

Many things! Haha, I learned to use this inking technique. Maybe the results were not the best and I still see the illustrations from other illustrators and it's like "woooow how did they do that?" haha ​​buuuuut I think that for using ink for the first time the results were pretty good and I'm very happy that I tried it. Also I left my comfort zone, yesss that part of our lives that is so comfortable. And also! Making this many illustrations with the same theme and technique ... I think it's my first time too!

I was so happy that I decided to post them in my stores, both, the originals and prints or printed on different media such as bags, notebooks, shirts, etc. I even made my 2018 calendar! hehe

On the other hand, something that I will do next year! (yes! next year I will do it, I just said it!) I'll look for models or inspiration in advance and thus only to illustrate!

Conclusion! Inktober for me was an excellent practice!, you learn a lot int he way if you really get serious about it, if you organize, prepare and leave as much as you can (as far as pre-production) in advance. It's a great way to meet new artists and a good way to support each other and pat us on the back for doing it!

So if you succeeded ... Good for you! Celebrate it the way you like it! (I'll go to get me a bunch of Oreos!)

Este año decidí intentar de nuevo el famoso Inktober! Para los que aún no saben que es, les dejo el link aquí con la explicación del creador Jake Parker. 

Luego de haberlo intentado hace 2 años, y no pasar del 3er día, el año pasado por fin logré hacer los 31 días!. Logré reencontrarme con las técnicas tradicionales, sieeempre me ha encantado realizar bocetos en lápiz y papel antes de digitalizarla o agregarle tinta y colores! Inclusive, mi primer y único tattoo (por ahora) es el outline de un lápiz! jeje.

bueno! volviendo al tema! La cuestión es que para el 2016, mi técnica de ilustración era en su mayoría digital y el Inktober 2016 hizo que tomara mi cajita de 12 creyones de madera de Faber Castell ( que estaba casi sin usar de 2 años) y me volviera a enamorar de esta técnica!.

Tanto fue así, que luego de terminar mis 31 días de Inktober seguí utilizando esta técnica. Me gusta la textura que le da a la ilustración, me hace sentirla más cálida y familiar.  Supongo que también influyó que en esa época trabajaba en una agencia (dementora) que consumía tooodo mi tiempo y el que no tenía. Nos tocaba trabajar todos los días mínimo hasta las 8...mínimo! Obviamente se imaginarán que lo que menos quería hacer al llegar o fines de semana era acercarme a la computadora. 

Ahora este año...! Decidí utilizar la tinta! Siempre me han llamado la atención otras técnicas pero la verdad no tengo la paciencia para utilizarlas y experimentar...y por esto decidí ponerme seria con esta prueba de 31 días. Esto de mostrar lo que hacía día a día me ayudó a comprometerme 100% con esta nueva técnica. También me decidí por esta porque usualmente utilizo muuuchos colores en mi ilustraciones y con esto regresaba a lo más básico, el blanco y negro.  Con esto de lo básico voy con los tips que decidí seguir este año! 

1. Tener una temática. Me encanta todo lo relacionado a la danza y decidí utilizar este tema para mi Inktober, para darle un cambio a la lista original y que al momento de verlo como una serie de ilustraciones, tuvieran mas coherencia entre ellas.

2. Tener una lista preparada! Existe una lista oficial de Jake Parker pero otros ilustradores también crearon sus propias listas. Yo decidí buscar 31 bailes e intentar encontrar algo en común entre los bailes y las palabras de la lista. Varias veces no fue posible jaja, igual ilustré un baile que me gustara sencillamente.

3. Selecciona tus materiales y trata de que sean pocos!. Decidí utilizar materiales que ya tenía, utilicé mi tinta Winsor & Newton, 2 pinceles (uno vino con unas acuarelas que me regalaron y el otro es Royal & Langniekel, comprado en Michaels), lápiz Mongol, marcador Micron 05 y Boli blanco Gelly Roll. Los tenía siempre listos en mi mesa para ser utilizados todos los días. Si tenemos muchos materiales puede resultar abrumador y vamos a querer utilizarlos TODOS y tardarnos mil horas.

4. Preparar el soporte!. Decidí que gastaría en el papel porque quería que el acabado final fuera el más limpio y decente jaja, entonces en un 2x1 de Michaels aproveché para comprar un block con papel de técnicas mixtas de Strathmore. Corté las hojas por la mitad hasta tener mis 31 hojas listas y así tendría ese trabajo adelantado para mi práctica del día a día.

5. No stress! la idea desde el principio fue practicar y no stresarse! tener en mente la meta, pero si habían complicaciones en el camino no morir en el intento jeje. Hubo días que lo logré, otros que no, otros que llegué a hacer hasta 4! pero nunca me sentí mal o stresada por no realizarlo a tiempo.

Entonces...! que aprendí de mi experiencia Inktober 2017??!

Muchas cosas! jaja, aprendí a utilizar esta técnica de entintado. Quizás los resultados no fueron los mejores y todavía veo las ilustraciones en tinta de otros ilustradores y es como "woooow como lo hacen" jaja perooo pienso que para nunca haberla utilizado los resultados me gustaron mucho, así que estoy muy contenta con haberlo intentado. Con esto también salí de mi zona confort!, siiii esa partecita de nuestras vidas que es tan comodita. Hacer tantas ilustraciones con la misma temática y técnica...creo que tampoco lo había hecho!.

Quedé tan feliz que decidí postearlas en mis tienditas tanto los originales como en prints o impreso en diferentes soportes como bolsitos, cuadernitos, franelitas etcs. Hasta hice mi calendario 2018! jeje. 

Por otro lado, algo que tomaré en cuenta para el próximo año! (si! el próximo año lo volveré a hacer, he dicho!) buscar con antelación los modelos o inspiración y así solo llegar a ilustrar!

Conclusión! Inktober me parece una excelente práctica!, aprendes un montón si en verdad te pones serio con ello, te organizas y dejas lo más que puedas (en cuanto a pre producción) adelantado. Es una excelente forma de conocer nuevos artistas y una buena forma de apoyarnos entre nosotros y darnos palmaditas en la espalda por haberlo logrado!

Así que si lo lograste.... Bien por ti! celébralo de la forma que más te guste! (yo voy por una Oreos jaja)

Hi! I looooooved to watch this tv show! it was so fun, they were just happy kids with the funniest and silliest situations. The 90's were so colorful and this tv show totally represents it! 

The other day while I was watching some videos on youtube, I watch this intro and I just had to draw them! And since I remembered taking pics of the process thiiis time haha I'll show you here how is my illustration process...scroll down!

Holis! Me ennnnnncantaba esta serie! era demasiado divertida en ese tiempo, no eran estas series todas enrolladas de los niños de ahora jaja, eran solo niños con problemas cómicos y divertidos. Los 90s fueron super coloridos y esta serie lo supo representar al max!

En estos días, mientras estaba pegada viendo videos de youtube, me encontré con este intro que me llevó a esos tiempos y al instante tuve que dibujarlos! y como finalmente me acordé de tomar fotos del proceso, les mostraré un poco como es mi forma de trabajo...ahora baja para más!

This are the materials I used for this illustration. Oops! I forgot to add the sketchbook! it was Canson Mix Media 185 g. 

Estos son los materiales que utilicé en esta ilustración. Oops! se me olvidó agregar el cuaderno de boceto que usé! es Canson Mezcla de medios 185 gr.

 This are the reference images I used. I changed a few things, took out the background and add some textures like the intro so it could look moooore colorful.

Estas son las imágenes de referencia que usé. Cambié unas cositas, quité el fondo y agregué las texturas que aparecen en el intro para que tuvieran más coloritos!

I used red Col-erase pencil for the sketch. They come in different colors, they are great for sketching marking different things with different colors for the same sketch...I normally just use one thou haha

Utilicé el lápiz Col-erase rojo para el boceto. Ellos vienen en varios colores y son super chéveres para bocetos, sobretodo cuando es un boceto donde quieres marcar con diferentes colores los diferentes aspectos...aunque yo normalmente uso solo uno jiii

For the inking I used a Micron 0.3, I like this thickness for this kind of illustrations. And then I erased the pencil lines.

Para las lineas utilicé un Micron 0.3, me gusta este grosor de líneas para este tipo de ilustración yyy luego borré todas las lineas de lápiz. 

Then I filled eeeverything with Promarker and Copic markers.

Luego rellené tooodo con los marcadores Promarker y Copic.

For lights, shadows, textures or for changing a little bit the colors I used Faber Castell colored pencils.

Para luces, sombras, texturas o cambiar un poco los colores, utilizo los colores de madera Faber Castell. 

And for the final touches! I used the White Gelly Roll Sakura 08 for the lights in the eyes and lips.

Y para los toques finales! Utilicé el boli blanco Gelly Roll Sakura 08 para los brillos en los ojos y labios.
